The Party by Regina Spektor
I love this portrait. It’s easily one of the best I’ve ever taken of Kara both technically and sentimentally… I don’t know if that’s a word. I’ve taken hundreds of pictures of Kara over the years but I feel like this moment really captures her energy.
Technically, it’s beautiful as well, if I can toot my own horn a bit. The lighting is gorgeous, the earring looks perfectly placed, her hair has so much dimension and life and her smile has just a hint of a laugh behind it. None of it was posed or organized, it just all fell into place this way.

Sometime you’re good, sometimes you’re lucky. I think luck had a lot to do with this shot. The reflection off the water really makes this photo explode with color and that’s why it’s my #3 photo from this year.
I took this photo after a sweltering hike through St. John that ended in this beautiful untouched beachhead. I gave it this extreme crop to emphasize how dense the forest is before releasing you into a pristine white beach with beautiful turquoise waters. Kara didn’t know I was setting this photo up and her pose works perfectly.
Tonight’s song is Ribs by Lorde. I’ve been subconsciously humming it all day so I figured it’s worth sharing.
I had this photo shoot back in March for Jessica and Nick Williamson and their daughter Evelyn. I noticed a significant jump in my photography abilities from this shoot. I thought I did a pretty good job while I was in the middle of shooting but when I got them home and started editing, I was amazed at how good they looked. It seemed like I borrowed someone else’s photos, someone who really knew what they were doing.
This was my first baby shoot and again, I was very lucky to have a great first experience that has me looking forward to doing many more in the future!
Tonight’s band is by request for one of my oldest friends and the song is one I’ve loved since I first heard it: Private Helicopter by Harvey Danger
